This Story Doesn’t Leave the Room: December 4 Newsletter

Creative Factor Strategic Advisor Tucker Margulies poses for a portrait during Creatives & Coffee.

This week, we have big news about…

But first…our Strategic Advisor Tucker Margulies shares his view from our first Creatives & Coffee about why creative professions captivate us.

Matt and I do not agree on everything. He believes I should contribute more writing to this esteemed publication. I think that no one is asking for that other than him. But I am open-minded so here we are.

Matt is a big Dave Matthews Band fan…like 50 shows and counting big. My count is closer to zero in that it is exactly zero (I like DMB just fine, don’t come at me DMB fans).

This fact was important when he pitched the first VIP guest for our new event series Creatives and Coffee: Sanjay Suchak who has photographed everyone from Tina Fey to Madeleine Albright to Nathaniel Rateliff to Mike Tyson, and is the touring photographer for the Dave Matthews Band

Our interview with Sanjay has been one of our most popular articles to date, and it just so happened that Sanjay would be in New York City in late November with DMB playing two sold out shows at Madison Square Garden.

Matt pitched the concept: What if we had Sanjay show us how he can take a great photo in five minutes or less?

I was excited by the idea, but a small part of me suspected Matt was trying to weasel his way into a concert. It turns out he had tickets to both the Friday and Saturday shows already, so his enthusiasm was genuine.

Sanjay liked the idea and the next thing we knew we were introducing him as the first Creatives & Coffee VIP guest. How did it go?

Sanjay is one of the most captivating visual artists I have ever met in person. It takes a special personality to photograph both Madeleine Albright and Mike Tyson. It takes incredible craftsmanship and talent to shoot a live concert at 10 p.m. and then whittle down the 700 shots to the best that are ready to ship by 1 a.m. for social media usage.

Our dream with Creatives & Coffee was to create an intimate space for us to trade creative secrets, inspiration, and practice our crafts. I feel confident saying we achieved that. But we got a whole lot more. We got the stories that remind us why these professions captivate us.

How do you meet Mike Tyson? Well through Flavor Flav, of course. How did Madeleine Albright want to be photographed? Doing a pirouette. What do you say to Tina Fey to get the right photo? It’s a bit of an inside joke, which is why you have to attend these events in person to hear the off-the-record stories we can't print here.

I can’t think of a better way to have spent the morning.

In our feature article this week we share some of the incredible gems that Sanjay left us with. We hope you’ll find a way to use them in your life and look forward to seeing you at one of our next Creatives & Coffee events.

Have a great week.
Tucker Margulies, Strategic Advisor
